ROADWORTHY CERTIFICATE

A Certificate of Roadworthiness is a legal requirement introduced by the Australian government to minimise the number of poorly-maintained vehicles running on the road and ensure the safety of motorists and the public in general. Although everyone has heard of the Roadworthy Certificate, its purpose is often misunderstood. A roadworthy should not only give you a reliable check of whether a vehicle is mechanically reliable but, more importantly, if it is safe for road use.

However, having a Certificate of Roadworthiness does not mean your vehicle is in top shape or free from any signs of deterioration. Window wipers, brakes and lights must be fully functional.

Generally, this certificate is required whenever you plan on buying or selling your vehicle, or if you are re-registering a vehicle that carries passengers or goods. If your car is brand new and has never been registered, or if it’s a specially constructed vehicle (such as a backhoe, forklift, wheel log loader, etc.), then you’re probably exempt from the roadworthy requirement. The Roadworthy Inspection covers a comprehensive examination of the following:

• wheels and tyres 
• seats and seatbelts 
• lights and reflectors 
• steering suspension 
• structural integrity 
• windscreen and windows (including front wipers and washers) 
• body rust or damage 
• any other related items on the vehicle’s engine, chassis or body

The Certificate can only be issued by a licensed vehicle tester operating from a nominated or authorised service station or garage.
